Healthy Gums Are the Foundation of a Healthy Smile

Consistent professional cleanings are one of the most important things you can do for your long-term oral health. Without them, plaque and calculus (tartar) gradually accumulate along and beneath the gum line, triggering inflammation and progressive bone loss. Left unchecked, this can ultimately result in premature tooth loss.

Gum disease is far more widespread than most people realize more than half of adults have some form of it. The encouraging news is that a range of effective treatment options exists, and when caught early, the condition is very manageable. At Lynn Dental, we offer comprehensive periodontal therapy tailored to the severity of each patient’s individual situation.

Recognising the Signs of Periodontal Disease

Gum disease does not always cause obvious pain, which is why knowing what to look for matters. Common warning signs include

How We Treat Periodontal Disease

Treatment at Lynn Dental begins with a thorough review of your current oral hygiene routine and practical guidance on how to improve it at home. The clinical portion of treatment then focuses on mechanically removing the bacteria, plaque, and hardened tartar that have built up on the root surfaces of your teeth a procedure known as scaling and root planing (SRP).

This deep-cleaning process is performed using a combination of precision hand instruments and an ultrasonic scaler, which uses high-frequency vibrations to break down stubborn deposits effectively and comfortably. Where needed, we may also apply antimicrobial agents or localized antibiotics directly to affected areas to support healing of deep gum pockets and reduce the likelihood of needing surgical intervention.

How It Works Periodontal Therapy at Lynn Dental

Comprehensive Periodontal Evaluation

Your visit begins with a thorough examination of your gums, teeth, and supporting bone. We measure the depth of any gum pockets, check for signs of bleeding or inflammation, and review any X-rays needed to assess bone levels. This gives us a complete picture of your gum health and helps determine the most appropriate course of treatment.

Personalised Treatment Planning

Based on the evaluation findings, our team discusses your results with you in plain language and outlines a clear treatment plan. We explain what is happening, why it matters, and what each recommended step involves so you feel fully informed and in control before anything begins.

Scaling & Root Planing

For patients with active gum disease, scaling and root planing is the core treatment. We carefully remove plaque, tartar, and bacterial buildup from the tooth surfaces and root areas below the gum line. Root surfaces are then smoothed to discourage bacteria from reattaching and to help the gum tissue heal and reattach properly.

Antimicrobial Therapy (Where Needed)

In cases where deeper pockets require additional support, we may apply antimicrobial agents or localized antibiotics directly to the treated areas. This gives the healing process an extra boost and helps reduce the risk of infection recurring in those sites.

Ongoing Maintenance & Monitoring

Periodontal disease is a chronic condition that requires long-term management. Following active treatment, we schedule regular periodontal maintenance appointments typically every three to four months to monitor your gum health, perform targeted cleanings, and catch any early signs of recurrence before they progress.
