Simple vs. Surgical Extractions

Simple Extraction

A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible in the mouth. The area is numbed with local anesthesia, and the tooth is loosened and removed with dental instruments. Simple extractions are quick and recovery is usually fast.

Surgical Extraction

A surgical extraction is needed for teeth that are not fully erupted (such as impacted wisdom teeth) or that have broken off at the gum line. A small incision is made in the gum to access and remove the tooth.

What to Expect After an Extraction

Some bleeding, swelling, and discomfort for the first 24–72 hours is normal
Bite on a gauze pad for 30–45 minutes after the procedure to control bleeding
Apply ice packs to reduce swelling
Eat soft foods for a few days soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes
Avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, or rinsing vigorously for 24 hours to protect the clot
Take any prescribed medications as directed
